The Finnish songstress Sansa returns with abrand new album (her third) titled ‘Savior’.Displaying her impeccable songwriting skillsand a happy knack for building immersivesoundscapes, ‘Savior’ also impresses in thatthat all the instruments involved are played by either Sansa or her producer Janne Oinas. Sansa hails from Helsinki, Finland. A country best known as the land of a thousand lakes andlong dark winters, the sun comes up only in summertime. "I try to laugh as much as possibleto survive the Northern melancholy!", she says. That defiance of the dark, geographicallandscape infuses Sansa’s latest album, one which draws from a surprisingly wide variety ofdisparate influences ‐ mixing up folk, pop, trip hop and even disco (Sansa covers Italo‐discoqueen Sabrina's massive Eurohit ‘Boys (Summertime Love)’ by turning it into a subtle andhaunting folk song.
A sense of being an outsider and the theme of forgiveness are recurring references in herwork. Her lyrics are delivered with an engaging openess and the musical whole comestogether with a quietly deceptive brilliance.
Biographical notes: Sansa was born in 1980 in Seinäjoki, sometimes nicknamed ‘theAmerica of Finland’. She played soccer in the local team and was determined to have aprofessional career abroad but in her late teens she got involved with music. She got herfirst guitar and started to jam with it every day after school. " It sort of opened me to aworld of emotions. Music became my muse, a confidant. I had a lot of existential angst backthen and I could sing gibberish for hours and beat up my guitar" she says. Sansa listened tomusic from all genres ‐ Madonna, Nirvana, David Bowie, Dolly Parton, The Beatles, Air,Radiohead, Eurythmics, Maria Callas to Ravel and Debussy. She further developed hersinging and guitar playing by attending the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki. Whilststudying there, she was exposed to an eclectic range of folk and jazz, blues and pop artistsincluding John Lee Hooker, Feist, Thom Yorke, among others.
She made a couple of demos and got one of her songs picked up by an A&R person fromWarner Music Finland and was immediately signed. Her first album ‘Vagabond Girl’ wasreleased in 2005 with positive reviews. But Sansa felt somewhat in need of a break. "I feltthat I was being too manipulated by other people when it came to my music. It wasn't funanymore". She promised herself not to do music again until it felt once more good andcomfortable.
In 2007 Sansa attended to a film school in Helsinki University of Applied Sciences to studyfilm sound. It was not long before she directed a short documentary of live‐looping and wasinterested in the way live‐loopers approached the music. "It was more like a scientistorganizing sounds with a pipette in a laboratory, creating a piece in a real time. I learnedthat you shouldn't have any boundaries while performing and making music. It opened anew world for me".
Over the years she has composed music to short movies and documentaries beside sounddesign and supported Robert Plant, Genesis, Bryan Adams, Katie Melua and MarthaWainwright on their tours in Finland. Gathering speed on the live front as well she wasawarded the ”Debutant of the Year” accolade by the Helsinki Festival in 2010 and receivedthe Nokia Young Talent Scholarship in 2006 while graduating from the Helsinki Pop/JazzConservatory.
Her second album ‘Sansa’ (2009) came out on Texicalli Records. It was produced by JanneOinas and received rave reviews. The single ‘Sorry My Love’ gained a lot of airplay on radio.Sansa's third album to date ‘Savior’ is again produced by Janne Oinas. It came out in late2011 in Finland but will be released in May 2012 throughout Europe, the US and Japan. Aninternational stage beckons for Sansa and her unique musical imagination.
